Sonoma Coast

Stretching along California's raw and rugged northern shores—and reaching quite far inland—Sonoma Coast is the largest AVA in Sonoma County. The proximity to the ocean makes wines here very different from those from more central AVAs. Whether the vineyards are on high ridges above the fog line or warm, fog-shrouded valley floors, the marine soils, low temperatures and cool Pacific breezes slow the ripening of the grapes. The result? Highly structured, delicate wines with plenty of acidity. The main stars here are white peach-tinged Chardonnay and wild strawberry-flavored Pinot Noir, but you will also find some excellent cool-climate Syrah with notes of white pepper and cherry.
